Abstract

The objective of this study was to analyze how commercial video games can be used as an assessment tool in the process of reading comprehension in students of English as a foreign language. To this end, a review of the literature on video games, their effects and their incursion in the field of education, specifically in the processes of reading comprehension and evaluation of foreign languages, was carried out. Based on this and using a mixed approach, a pedagogical intervention was carried out with a subsequent analysis where the results obtained through traditional evaluation are related to those obtained through the commercial video game Ace Attorney: Phoenix Wright. Through instructional methods such as video game-based assessment, evidence-centered design and covert assessment, the effectiveness of this genre of video games as a means of assessment and its contribution to the learning of a foreign language is confirmed.
