Las Instituciones de Educación Superior (IES) en Colombia tienen por mandato de ley promover el fomento de la práctica del deporte, como contribución a la formación integral de la persona. Para ello, se estableció una de las manifestaciones del deporte; en la ley 181 de 1995, denominado Deporte Universitario. Así, se reglamentó el Bienestar Universitario en las IES y una de las funciones a las que se dedica, es la prestación de servicios deportivos para el cumplimiento de la ley, pero no orientado hacia el perfeccionamiento de deportistas con miras al alto rendimiento, como sucede en otros países.

The Institutions of Higher Education (HEI) in Colombia are legally mandated to promote the promotion of the practice of sport and the promotion of it as a contribution to the integral formation of the person. For this, one of the manifestations of sport was established in Law 181 of 1995 called University Sports. Thus, University Welfare was regulated in the IES and one of the functions to which it is dedicated is the provision of sports services for compliance with the law, but not oriented towards the improvement of athletes with a view to high performance as happens in other countries.
