Los materiales que por su utilización estan expuestos a condiciones ambientales aceleran la pérdida de sus propiedades físicas y químicas disminuyendo su vida útil. Este proceso se denomina corrosión, el cual se demanda prevención y control. Una de las posibles soluciones es la protección catódica. El aspecto económico de la corrosiónes uno de los factores por los que muchos investigadores se dedican a estudiarla y prevenirla, ya que las perdidas económicas provocadas por ésta suman millones de dólares.
