Author Guidelines

Focus and Scope

In 2007, during the second half of the year, a group of academic staff including various students working for the Faculty of Technological Studies at Universidad Distrital Francisco Jos´e de Caldas perceived the necessity to build a serial publication intended for the circulation of research results in topics of the large area of engineering and technology; in thematic area of Electrical, Electronics and computing; and in the disciplines of electrical and electronic engineering, robotics and automatic control, automation and control systems, engineering systems and communications, telecommunications, and Hardware and computer architecture; as well as basic and related sciences.

Therefore, these ideas that coincide thematically with the Classification of Scientific Areas according to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), finally consolidated and begun to play a leading role in terms of search, treatment, innovation and production of knowledge socially useful, and the strengthening an academic community that has an impact on other sectors and aspects of life (e.g. the society, the productive sector and the managerial sectors).

Ultimately, this journal (entitled Electronic Vision: beyond a solid state), of scientific-technological nature, wants to emerge as a space of written production aimed at the academic community of district –Bogota -, of nation –Colombia-, and international –Latin American and Caribbean-.

The editions of the journal are carried out at the Faculty of Technological Studies (Universidad Distrital Francisco Jos´e de Caldas) and they are issued once a semester: being the first issue of January to June, visible in June of each year; and the second number from July to December, visible in the month of December each year.

The following provides a set of guidelines that authors should follow for the successful publication of the documents, which must be sent by them as original products on the condition of being unpublished pieces of work, not submitted simultaneously for publication in other journals, or other publisher, and represent actual contributions of the authors - at which they have not copied or plagiarized in whole or in part of other works; -and in any rate they keep the highest ethical practices and best writing standards.

I. Constituent sections of the Journal

A RESEARCH VISION:Articles appearing in this section represent products of scientific-technological, totally or partially completed research studies, as seen from the perspective of Engineering. In this section, the following kinds of documents can be found:

1) Article of scientific and technological research studies. A document that presents, in a detailed way, the original results of completed research projects. The structure generally used contains four important parts: introduction, methodology, results, and conclusions.

2) Reflection article. A document that presents results of complete research studies based on the author’s analytic, interpretive, or critical perspective about a specific topic, involving citation of original sources.

3) Survey article. A document that resulted from complete research studies where results of previous investigations or unpublished work are analyzed, systematized, and integrated within a single field of science or technology. The purpose of such articles is to provide details of advances and development trends. The article is characterized to present a careful bibliographical survey of at least 50 references

A CASE-STUDY VISION: This type of article presents the revision or reflection about technical and methodological experiences when considered in a specific case. The experiences are observed considering other similar cases (unpublished and outstandingly graded pieces of work, developments and specific technological applications). In this section, the following kinds of documents can be found:

4) Short article. A brief document that presents preliminary or partially original results of a scientific or technological investigation that, in general, requires immediate circulation.

5) Case study. A document that presents the results of a study about a particular situation, with the purpose of presenting technical and methodological experiences, considered in a specific case, to the public. It includes a commented systematic revision of the literature about similar cases.

6) Topic survey. This is a document that results from the critical revision of the literature about a particular topic.

A CURRENT VISION: This type of article builds on topics in order to contribute to the socialization of knowledge, presenting the critical revision of the literature on a particular topic in engineering to the corresponding academic peers. In this section, the following kinds of documents can be found:

7) Translation. This type of article includes translations of classic texts, modern texts, as well as transcriptions of historical documents or of documents of particular interest in the domain of publication of the present journal.

8) Topic survey. These are documents that result from the critical revision of the literature about a particular topic.

A CONTEXT VISION: The purpose of this type of article is to deal with topics, phenomena, developments or innovations that are identified in the environment of engineering or engineering teaching. The topics are addressed critically from the viewpoint of basic sciences and human sciences. In this section, the following kinds of documents can be found:

9) Case Study. A document that presents the results of a study about a particular situation, with the purpose of presenting technical and methodological experiences, considered in a specific case, to the public. It includes a commented systematic revision of the literature about similar cases

13) Reflection document non-derivative from investigation. This is a document that presents a result, not necessarily derivative from investigation, obtained from the author’s analytic, interpretive, or critical perspective on a specific topic

14) Bibliographical review. These pieces of text consist of soundly structured comments that suggest, in a critical or descriptive way, the reading of texts, books, or documents of interest for the academic community.

15) Others Documents that can be categorized according to the innovation process and development of the journal

II. Language and appropriate style for writing articles

• It is necessary that the articles are written for an international audience, avoiding the excessive centralization in strictly local experiences or matters.

• Structures of simple sentences must be used, avoiding lengthy or complex sentences.

• Basic and common vocabulary must be used. The technical terms must be explained shortly; likewise, the meaning of abbreviations and acronyms must be presented the first time that they appear in the text.

• The authors are responsible for guaranteeing that their work is led in a professional way and is in accordance with professional ethics.

III. The publication format

• The postulated articles must have a minimum extension of 10 pages, no longer than 20 pages, and double space is to be used. Letter font must be Arial 12 points using margins of 2 centimeters.

• Two copies of the document must be submitted in electronic and printed formats using letter-size paper. These documents are to be written using .doc file format. For articles whose origin is international, the means of submission will be electronic-mail based.

• Tables and figures not only be displayed within the article, attach in an additional folder. The images are sent in .jpg or .png format, black and white, at a minimum resolution of 3,000 pixels by 2,400 pixels, in Real size or 300 dpi. On the other hand, if attached tables should be editable in Word and never embed them as images because you cannot edit them. If use of graphs or tables in Excel is done, attach the original files in the respective formats. Avoid too long tables; if the authors consider include many relevant data within a single table, it is recommended to divide it. In the case of maps, circuit diagrams or scanned photographs, also must be included in a separate folder in jpg or png format with a minimum resolution of 600 dpi (or its equivalent in pixels).

• All figures, graphs, maps and tables must be made in black or grayscale, numbered and titled clearly. These must be located in the nearest place to where they are cited. In figures where there simultaneous data information and the authors want distinguish them require use conventions as dashed lines, continuous, or geometric shapes

• When articles include equations, these must be made on an equations editor appropriate for Word.

IV. Structure of the content

• The articles presented to the Journal should have the following structure:

- Title: it must be short, no longer than nine words, or divided into title and subtitle. Titles should be appealing to potential readers and written in capitals both in Spanish and English. Responsibility for style correction of titles and keywords of the articles submitted in languages other than Spanish will be of the authors exclusively.

- Author(s): Author’s complete name(s), accompanied by academic qualification, affiliation, and institutional e-mail.

- Abstract:it must be presented in Spanish and English and should be shorter than 250 words. Abstracts must contain: 1) what the author has made, 2) how he made it (only if it is important to detail), 3) the main results; and 4) the relevance of the results. Also, it must be accompanied by three to six keywords written in the two corresponding languages, namely Spanish and English: to select them the reader should consult this link, among others: http://vocabularies.unesco.org/browser/thesaurus/ es/ , and choose an area similar to the theme of the Journal. Responsibility for style correction of abstracts or full text of the articles submitted in languages other than Spanish will be of the authors exclusively.

- Content: it should be presented by sections.

- Footnote: they must be of explanatory nature.

- Acknowledgements: they are included at the end of the document, before references. They must present information about the project, if there is, or of other projects that led to the completion of the work being presented.

- References: The use of bibliographical references must be handled in a numerical way in the order sources have been mentioned throughout the text, for example: [1] for the first citation that appears in the article. When several serial sources are cited, numbers should be used as follows: [1-9], not serially written [1,2,9]. If the same source is cited again in another part of the document, the number assigned initially should be the same. In the reference section, documents are listed according to the order of appearance in the text.
