Abstract (en)
This systematic review explores how the concept of bilingualism has been defined and interpreted in Colombian academic journals between 2004 and 2024, a period strongly shaped by national bilingualism policies. Following PRISMA 2020 guidelines, the review analyzed 58 peer-reviewed articles. Thematic and frequency analyses revealed four recurrent conceptual trends related to personal, sociocultural, educational, and institutional dimensions of bilingualism. Findings reveal a shift from proficiency-based definitions to more sociocultural and critical perspectives. Ultimately, the study contributes to the national dialogue on bilingualism by providing a clearer, more diverse picture of how it is conceptualized in research and how this shapes educational practices and ideologies in the local field.
