Abstract (en)
This article presents partial findings from a doctoral research study that explored English teachers’ understandings of critical interculturality (CI) in the context of Colombian public schools. The study was guided by Participatory Action Research (PAR) and designed around a series of workshops (WS) that incorporated Computer-Assisted Language Learning (CALL) as a pedagogical mediation. The research question addressed in this paper is: What views do English teachers hold of critical interculturality before, during, and after a series of workshops involving CALL However, this article addresses only the before- and during-workshop components. Data sources for the broader study include teacher journals, semi-structured interviews, focus groups, observations, and institutional documents, defined as the didactic and pedagogical materials produced and used by teachers during the workshop and implementation stages. However, since the present article reports partial findings, only interviews and journals are analyzed here. The analysis reveals that teachers’ views of CI shifted across the three stages: initially limited or paradoxical, later challenged and redefined during CALL-mediated activities, and finally showing more CI awareness and pedagogical incorporation after the WS. These findings suggest that PAR and workshops on CI and CALL encourage valuable reflection on CI through CALL tools, creating opportunities for English teachers to reframe their pedagogical practices toward intercultural aims.
