Resumen (es)

Una relación compleja, subordinada y muy dolorosa ha sido la que el gobierno de los Estados Unidos ha planteado a lo largo de su historia a los habitantes originarios de ese país, implicando para los indígenas perdida de sus tierras, persecución, relocalización forzosa, guerras, cuando no aniquilamiento físico o cultural. El artículo se propone narrar la historia de tal subordinación y la resistencia de los nativos americanos, especialmente a partir de la renovación de la identidad cultural indígena como consecuencia del incremento de su activismo político en el entorno de cambio social de la década de los años Sesenta del siglo XX. Se muestra cómo la sociedad estadounidense intenta pasar de un esquema unilateral de relacionamiento a uno más bilateral, en el que las necesidades y expectativas de los indígenas también cuenten para el diseño y puesta en marcha de la política pública dirigida a ellos.
