Abstract (en)

Context: Anthropogenic pressures have intensified entropy in urban hydrological systems, affecting water availability, quality, and long-term sustainability. However, entropy remains underutilized as an operational variable in water management studies.

Methodology: This study applies a multi-method approach integrating documentary analysis, fieldwork (n = 179), and geospatial modeling. Quantitative and qualitative indicators, including extraction/recharge ratios, contamination levels, and social perception, were systematically linked to the Entropy-Homeostasis-Negentropy (EHN) conceptual model.

Results: The findings reveal that the principal water sources of the Guadalajara Metropolitan Area (GMA) span entropy states from subcritical to hypercritical. Groundwater systems exhibit structural deficits, while social data indicate low adoption of water recycling practices due to infrastructural and institutional barriers.

Conclusions: This study operationalizes entropy as a measurable variable and demonstrates its direct relationship with water sustainability and security. The Entropy-Hydrological-Network (EHN) model constitutes a novel analytical framework for diagnosing system states and guiding policy-oriented interventions under circular economy principles.
